Scrappy Collage Sketchbook Flipthrough: Intuitive Art with Paper Scraps
Ever find yourself saving every little paper scrap? Even the weird ones? Same!
In this video, I’m taking you through my sketchbook to share how I use all those odd bits of leftover paper, magazine clippings, envelope windows, and even my daughter’s old drawings to create scrappy collage pages that are full of energy and experimentation.
This isn’t a step-by-step tutorial. It’s more like a peek into my creative brain. I’ll show you how I approach collage intuitively: sometimes in neat little grids, sometimes as wild, abstract layers. It’s all about discovering what feels good, learning through doing, and embracing the perfectly imperfect.
Materials:
Paper scraps (painted papers, old art, packaging, magazine pieces, envelope windows, etc.)
Sketchbook
Glue stick or matte medium
What This Process Is All About
Using what you already have
All the little things you’ve saved “just in case”? Now’s the time to use them. No need for perfect pieces: torn, wrinkled, textured bits work best.
Letting go of rules
I don’t follow a fixed plan when collaging. Sometimes I use a grid structure with a few boundaries, sometimes I go fully abstract. It’s about the mood I’m in and the materials at hand.
Combining textures, colors & shapes
Play with contrast. Combine smooth magazine paper with rough sketches, muted colors with pops of bright, geometric shapes with organic scribbles.
Reflecting on what works (and what doesn’t)
This kind of intuitive play helps you develop your eye, your preferences, and your creative voice. All without pressure.
