Turn Your Name Into Art
A simple creative warm-up exercise
Sometimes the hardest part of making art is simply getting started.
Your mind might feel busy, tired, or full of expectations. This creative warm-up removes that pressure completely. Instead of starting with a complicated idea, you begin with something very simple and personal: your own name.
By writing your name and connecting the shapes that appear, a surprising pattern slowly starts to grow across the page. The result often looks a little like a stained-glass window made from lines and shapes.
What I love about this exercise is that it works on many levels.
It can help you:
• warm up your creativity before starting a larger project
• relax and unwind after a long day
• draw while watching TV (that's when I do this exercise ;))
• enjoy a few quiet minutes of playful mark-making
Materials Needed:
This exercise is intentionally simple. Use whatever you already have at home.
You might use:
a sketchbook or sheet of paper
a pen, fineliner, or pencil
markers, colored pencils, crayons, or paint for coloring
Instructions:
Write your name
Open your sketchbook and write your name across the page . You can play with the size and placement of the letters. They don’t have to be perfectly aligned. Let them appear naturally on the page.Start connecting the shapes
Look at the corners and edges of your letters. Begin drawing lines from one point to another. These lines can connect corners, edges, or any point that feels interesting. Some lines might be straight, others curved. Follow your intuition and let the pattern grow.Continue until the page fills with shapes
As more lines appear, your page will slowly fill with small shapes and compartments. It often begins to resemble a geometric pattern or a stained-glass window. Keep adding lines until it feels finished.Start coloring the spaces
Once your structure is complete, begin filling the shapes with color. You can choose colors deliberately, create a limited palette, or simply pick colors randomly. Random colors often make the process even more relaxing because you don’t have to think about it.Notice what appears
Sometimes interesting shapes appear while coloring. You might suddenly see something recognizable: a face, an animal, a heart, or another image hidden inside the pattern. You can choose to follow that discovery with your colors or simply continue coloring the shapes randomly. Both approaches work beautifully.Finish when it feels done
Eventually, the page will feel complete. You’ll have created something unexpected: your own handmade coloring page, built from nothing more than your name and a few simple lines.
Try These Variations:
Once you’ve tried this exercise with your name, you can experiment with other words or combinations.
For example:
your address
your birthdate
a favorite word
a meaningful quote
the name of someone you love
Each word creates a completely different pattern. Even when you use the same word, you will end up with a completely different result.
What Makes This Exercise So Relaxing
Many creative exercises require decisions: composition, color choices, materials, and technique.
This one removes most of that pressure. The structure appears automatically from the letters you wrote, and the coloring stage can be as intuitive as you like. Because of that, it’s a wonderful exercise for creative flow, mindfulness, and simple creative play.
It’s one of those activities you can return to again and again whenever you need a gentle way to reconnect with your creativity.
